The Lodge at Detroit Lake

We wanted to go hiking at Mount Jefferson, but knew we’d be too tired for the long drive back to Portland, so we spent the night at a newly renovated motel in Detroit, Oregon (only 17 miles from the trailhead). The Lodge at Detroit Lake probably caters more to people going to Detroit Lake than hikers, but it is also an excellent place to stay if you want to spend time exploring Mount Jefferson, Opal Creek, Bull of the Woods or Three Fingered Jack areas.

After a day spent hiking at Mount Jefferson (see my blog post about the hike), we checked into our room, then walked down the street to the Korner Post Restaurant for a traditional country-style dinner.

Our room was small but cozy and plenty big for two people with a super comfy pillow-top mattressĀ  (much more comfortable than our inflatable camping mattress!). The room also included some nice touches, such as a ceiling fan, corner fireplace and big screen TV. Bonus points for sustainability: the shampoo, conditioner and bath gel dispenser in the bathroom cuts down on waste by eliminating single-use packaging. The first thing I did was take a nice long soak in the jetted tub to relax my aching muscles.

The only thing that would make the renovation of this lodge any better would be some landscaping in the front to replace some of the gravel/asphalt. Otherwise, I was very surprised to find such a nice place to stay so close to so many hiking options. I’m sure I’ll be back.
